If you plan to overclock your build-it-yourself computer or just want better airflow in your machine then you need a CPU cooler. As the name suggests, a CPU cooler ensures that the temperature of your processor is kept down, ensuring better performance.
The question of whether to choose water cooling or air cooling can result in an almost half-religious discussion. Both types can achieve the same low CPU temperature, but there are differences in compatibility and appearance. It is important to choose a CPU cooler that fits your cabinet and CPU socket.
If you are considering buying an air cooler, there are some specific things to be aware of. An air cooler usually consists of a copper or aluminum heat spreader that spreads the heat through some heat pipes in the cooling block. Some models also have a vapor chamber that spreads the heat even better. The cheap models usually come with one 120 mm fan while the slightly larger versions have two 140 mm fans and several cooling blocks. Because the size of a CPU can vary greatly, it is important that you make sure that the cooler does not interfere with e.g. your graphics card, your high profile RAM or your cabinet.
However, if you are looking for a water cooler, you will also find a wide selection from the biggest brands here. Today, most water coolers are sold to consumers pre-filled, so that you do not run into leakage problems. A water cooler is perfect for OC and looks good visually in a cabinet. Unlike the air cooler, the water cooler takes only a little bit of space on the CPU as the radiator is located elsewhere in the cabinet. If you plan to build a computer on a Mini-ITX motherboard, water cooling may be preferable, since it takes up less space in the cabinet.
No matter whether you choose air cooling or water cooling, you will achieve a good CPU temperature. Even if you do not plan to overclock, you may want to choose a powerful cooler. Air cooling is generally cheaper than water cooling, as it is a more simple construction. If you have plans to save money, you can achieve the same result with e.g. a Noctua air cooler, as you can with e.g. a Corsair water cooler.
