The giraffe is a long-necked, hoofed mammal that is at home in the open forests of sub-Saharan Africa. The giraffe is the highest living animal on land and despite its height is usually closely related to the much smaller and solitary okapi that lives in the dense tropical forests. There are nine recognized subspecies of the giraffe, which occur in different geographical locations and differ somewhat in colour and pattern of their spot-like markings.
