When you want to save files to your computer, you should use a hard drive. Many years ago, a 60 or 120GB hard drive was large, but today it is quite common to have a 1 TB (1,000 GB) hard drive. As an alternative to a classic hard drive (HDD), many people today choose an SSD as it is faster and comes in a more compact design.
If you need to store large files on a desktop computer or a NAS server, a HDD will still be the best choice. You get high storage capacity at a low price, but will have to do without the high transfer rate of the SSD. However, if you want to enjoy the benefits of both hard drive types, you can buy a hybrid hard drive. You get a small built-in SSD, but still the large capacity of many terabytes.
The two most commonly used hard drive sizes are 2.5" and 3.5". They deliver the same speed, but are compatible with different products. For a laptop computer or a console you need a 2.5 inch, but in a desktop computer or a NAS server you can use both sizes. The rotational speed determines how fast a hard disk can read/write and it normally lies around 5400 rpm or 7200 rpm. However, if you want a high read and write speed, you should instead invest in an SSD.
If you are looking for an external hard drive, we also have a wide range of cheap hard drives with high capacity. If you are in doubt about the size you need your hard drive to be, most people choose a model of 1 TB or more and other accessories.
